Spoon-billed Sandpiper and Siberian Crane are both on many birders’ bucket list and, with luck and good timing, they can be seen within striking distance of Shanghai. However the timing is critical. The Spoon-billed Sands disappear in the last week of October while the cranes only arrive at the beginning of November.
Several hardy souls set out in pursuit and encountered these and numerous other fantastic birds.
Listen to Colin, a recently retired GP and ex-chair of the British Birds Rarities Committee, recount all of these stories and more, illustrated by photos of some truly sensational birds.
The attached photograph, of a Spoon-billed Sandpiper, was taken by Colin.
