Marshside RSPB, Southport
The reserve is a mix of saltmarsh, coastal grassland and pools on the shores of the Ribble Estuary. We will hope to see a mix of duck, pink-footed geese and waders. Raptors should also be on the marsh. There is a basic visitors centre with a toilet, plus another hide and screen. The paths here can be exposed so bring warm clothing!
Meet in the RSPB car park at the junction of Marine Drive and Marshside Road at 10am. Postcode PR9 9NT.
Note that the Marine Drive road just north of and beyond the car park is due to be closed for repairs, but I am told that there is still access to the car park coming from Liverpool.
Bring your RSPB Membership card to display in your car.
Mere Sands Wood Nature Reserve
We will move on to Mere Sands Wood nature reserve for lunch.
There is a series of hides mostly over-looking productive pools, linked by woodland paths, and with views over surrounding farmland. We should have a good list by the end of the day!
There is a nice visitors centre with toilets, refreshments, picnic benches etc.
Meet in car park off Holmeswood Road, near Rufford, L40 1TG.
Free entrance to the reserve, but £2 car park fee.
