Birds of the Welsh hills and woods, and not too far from home.
While the title says ”to Maeshafn” this, in the practical planning, has become a walk starting and finishing at Llanferres with Maeshafn as the halfway point. Crossing the River Alyn we walk up through a network of footpaths along field margins before reaching the wooded hillside where the trail levels out before arrival at Maeshafn. Unfortunately, the only ‘facility’ here, The Miners’ Arms, doesn’t open until 6pm so we have to be self sufficient in refreshments. The return route is mostly gently down hill, recrossing the Alyn at a delightful spot and returning to our cars. The hedgerows and woods should be bursting into life and the bird breeding season well under way. I don’t expect anything exotic birdwise but a good Welsh country selection.
The distance involved is a ‘mere’ three miles but it is up and down. Taken gently at our usual bird-watching pace it should not prove too difficult. If the weather continues fine, walking shoes should be adequate, boots of course good for anything. As stated earlier, there are no facilities en route.
Directions
Take the road to Mold. i.e. Two Mills, The Welsh Road, A494. By-pass Mold staying on A494. Pass through Gwernymynydd and Loggerheads. Shortly after Loggerheads arrive Llanferres (40mph limit). Look for a bus shelter on left and right, then turn right (30mph) and immediately left into a ‘service road’ running parallel to the main road (the old road?). Plenty of parking space by the church here. The Druid PH is nearby. 0900meeting.
