The seasons are changing slowly from Summer to Autumn – although it is sometimes difficult to tell when we get such unsettled weather as we have been experiencing!
Swifts have largely left our shores already, apart from the odd straggler, and Swallows are gathering on telegraph wires in preparation for their departure. I often wonder what they are discussing with their excited chattering?!
Other summer visitors are moving through. Tern species are following the coast south, including this Sandwich Tern over Hilbre.
Meantime, other migrants are arriving on passage for for the winter. Turnstones are one of my favourite waders, especially when they are adorned with the remnants of their colourful, chestnut feathers.
Of course, some birds stay with us all year, such as Blackbird, Linnet and Carrion Crow. Coal Tits have started raiding my sunflower heart feeders to fill their food caches in readiness for the winter.
September means the start of our new Programme of activities, both Indoor and Outdoor. If you haven’t received your Programme yet, please make sure you have submitted the Subscription renewal form to Jean and paid the £12 fee, then Jean will post one out to you. Hopefully Members enjoy the varied range of topics and venues that the Committee has put together for you.
