Hale Lighthouse

Meet at St Mary’s Church, Church Street, Hale village at 10am.

Postcode L24 4AY – Park sensibly on the road.

We will walk from here down to Hale Lighthouse on the banks of the River Mersey, scanning the river and the surrounding hedgerows and fields.  We will be looking out for shorebirds, raptors and finches amongst other species.

We will return to our cars for lunch.  In the afternoon, we have the opportunity to visit nearby Hale Duck Decoy, approx. 30 minute walk away.  This small nature reserve is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and an SSSI, with a fascinating history.

There are no public toilets in Hale.  But there is the option to use the toilets in the Wellington pub or the Childe of Hale pub.  Both do coffee.

N.B. Whichever way you travel there from Wirral, there is a toll for both the Runcorn/Widnes bridges and the Mersey tunnels.

I confess that I’ve never used the bridges since tolls were introduced!

For anyone else who is unfamiliar, I understand that for both Runcorn bridges, you can pay in advance for your crossing, or by 11.59pm the day after your crossing i.e. Monday night.  There are no toll booths.

I believe the cost is £2 per crossing (so 2 crossings for the day) – unless you are registered for a discount.

You pay at the Mersey Tunnel booths as usual.
